Fitness News

Where were you guys/gals hiding this week?  Some of you were there and others have succumbed to the winter blues….

Music Requests

Scroll to the bottom, I've added a list of music you can request.  Send me a request and the class you want to hear it in.

Diabetes worldwide eplosion

It is now estimated that 350 million have diabetes worldwide.  This disease has plagued wealthier countries for years and despite good knowledge being available its getting worse.  Now we see it hitting poorer countries, where personal knowledge is considerably less and therefore much more easily impressed by the marketing pushing cheap low quality products as a luxury treat

Diabetes becoming alarmingly common worldwide, new study finds

Study says nearly 350 million diabetics worldwide

Is Television fattening ?

You don't need a PHD to gauge the nutritional value of food associated with TV's, it looks like this;

TV Dinner

What is a TV

You can't eat TV's, so how can they be fattening?  Well first we need to look at, from a nutritional viewpoint as to what a Television is.  It's a device designed to deliver marketing information to an large eager audience.

What marketing is delivered to you

As a rough rule of thumb, the less you need a product, the more it is marketed to you.  Product success depends on generating demand and a large mark up over manufacturing costs and generating demand is where marketing comes in.

How do they reel you in

The marketing boys will associate the product with things we that we often want;

-          Success

-          Humour

-          Peer approval

-          Being a good parent

-          Convenience

-          The list goes on

What calories are associated with TV

A typical male will burn 80 calories per hour watching a TV.  In that hour, how many calories where marketed at him.  Well I've had the TV on while I wrote this and had half an eye on it.  Which ones did I notice;

-          McDonalds family dinner, aka the good parents, Dad is really impressed with the content/deal

-          Chocolate, she hides it from her man so she can eat it all herself

-          Yoghurt (thick and creamy), the healthy option?  Though we don't actually know how this altered product compares with the base product (plain yoghurt)

-          Hungry jacks breakie deal

So where were the adverts for fruit, vegetables, nuts

And LOL, Australia has got fatter as TV's have got thinner;

-          Good old CRT

-          Current LCD

-          Latest LED

Track Racing

Race all Winter (RAW)

With 8 RPM classes and about 180k of bike commuting in my legs (Mon – Fri), what moment of insanity occurred to make the decision to race on a Friday night?  Even transportation was legalistically complicated.  Friday commenced with riding down to Rockdale, for the 6.15am RPM class and riding home afterwards.  Then I took my track bike to work on the train.  After work I was picked up and taken to Dunc Grey velodrome.  The home journey was with someone else.

So how did I go?

I signed up for Division 2, in the previous 2 years I'd ridden Division 3 and when I first went to Div 3 I was dropped in the races for a couple of weeks and was expecting the same in Div 2

Warm up race

We had 25 riders, one more than the maximum so they split the race into 2, with 12 of us going out.  With 2 ½ laps to go I found myself on the front, accelerated and rolled, but failed to find a good wheel.  4 riders got off the front and I came 5th, best of the rest but not in the hunt.

One lap screamer

This is possibly the race that I am worst at for all track racing, to be good at it, you need to be able to get quickly off the line and I don't possess that skill, so I came where I though I would – 4th out of 4 J

Snowball

Points are awarded for the winner of each lap and as the race progresses you get more points, ie lap 1 is one point, lap 2 is two points etc.  The entire field goes out (not split like the warm up).  I find myself boxed near the rear and elect to sit in and wait till I'm further near the front before going for points and that happened about ¾ way thru the race, where I tried to roll around 4 other riders contesting the sprint, but I was a little way back and didn't get there.  After that one rider got off the front and took the points.  So end result was zero points, but it gave me an indication that I will be in the hunt for placing's this year.  A fellow club member commented on how high the pace as, but as I'm new to this grade I don't know if its fast or not.

Combines

Misunderstood what race I was suppose to be in and missed the race.  Shrugged my shoulders and headed for the canteen where I had a sausage roll on order, hey it even came with onions.

Time Blaster

Missing the combines meant that I was eligible to ride the time blaster, pace is something like 51kph, not a lot different to what I did in the NSW team time trial championships, so quite possible for me to do it.  I sat down and waited for the thought to disappear…

Race All Winter (RAW) has started.  This is racing on Sydney's indoor velodrome on Friday nights.  I've missed last weeks racing and its about 50/50 for getting there this Friday night.

Information about the series is here => http://www.rawtrack.com.au/ and here => http://www.dhbc.org.au/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2456

Dulwich Hill Omnium

 So what could be more silly?  Lets add Saturday High Performance, taking it to 9 classes and some track racing at Tempe Velodrome on Saturday afternoon.

Flying 200

I arrive on time but find I've forgotten my shoes and go home to get them.  I arrive back just in time to do the flying 200mtr and go out with zero warmup, only to find that the northern bend of the track is wet, I do the flying 200 but push a tad softer thru the wet section for a time of 14.1 seconds, 0.9 seconds slower than my PB for Tempe Velodrome, quite slow.

We think the reason that corner of the track is wet is due to the sprinklers being on earlier

Points Race and Kerin

I decide not to race either of these races.  January 29th 2009 I had a major accident at Tempe Velodrome and have fond memories of how hard the track is

Fitness News #23

Fitness News #23

 th_SutherlandHeadstand21122008.jpg

Where were you guys/gals hiding this week?  Some of you were there and others have succumbed to the winter blues….

Music Requests

Hey, you got what you asked for, did you luv it!!!!!!!

Requests for this week are;

Tue 6.45pm Rockdale – Sweet Dreams.

Any other requests?

The cost to us of others poor lifestyle decisions

Started a thread on a forum about this and didn't find anything of serious interest, but I was a bit put off by a number of negative comments about over weight people, basically saying its their fault.  I don't see it that way, switch on your TV and there's constant adverts for junk food, whether it be a fast food chain, pizza, soft drink or confectionary.   How can you blame people for poor decisions when they are bombarded with how much fun their life is, if they make these poor decisions.  How often do you see an advert for apples?

Nutrition

Man, every time I read one of Antashia's posts, I rethink my diet and look for ways to improve it - http://primalmeded.com/2011/06/15/natural-my-a/

In simple terms, the further it is away from the farm the worse it is for us.  I'm thinking about giving up margarine, replacing it with butter.  Who can guide me on this?

KFC – apparently it stands for Kid Fattening Centre  LOL

Outdoor Cycling

Road Racing

NSW Club Team Time Trial (TTT) Championships

DHBC Team
Michael Clement (captain)
Mark Masterson
Mark Lacey
Craig Weller

Location Golburn NSW, lets call it cold-burn. Conditions were cold and windy, on a dead semi hilly road.

Seeded 6th by NSW Cycling, we were giving a 12.20pm start (teams 2 minutes apart), pefect for a warm start - NOT. When we had arrived at 9.45am there was no wind, but by midday the wind was pretty strong and cold. The decision was made as to what to wear and I rugged up, only to change my mind 10 minutes later and take one item off.

0-10k
We were working well together making good progress when at 8k Mark M declared that that he couldn't go on, we asked him to sit on the back but he said it was quits and pulled off, leaving 3 of us

10 -22.5k (turnaround)
About 15k, Craig started to have problems, we told him to stay on the back while Mark L and I shared the work. We caught the team in front of us, but they got a flat just as we approached them. I don't understand why they stopped, there were 4 of them and you only need 3 to finish.

22.5k - 41.5k
Mark L and I took up roles, so to focus on Craig's pace. Mark L kept a close eye on Craig, while I punched a hole thru the wind. For the return journey I did all the work on the front apart from 3 turns of about 1k or so by Mark L to give me a short rest. Mark L had to keep yelling at me to slow down, he was doing an excellent job of protecting Craig. At 41k I red lined and Mark L took the 3rd short turn, I recovered straight away and went back to the front.

41.5k - 45k
Craig was seriously wasted, I had gone too quick on the flat section (say 38k - 41.5k) and the bridge over the freeway became a hill for him, we were so close but he was on death row. All I could do was sit in front, while Mark L and I provided as much wind protection as possible. We were close to getting the next team in front of us, it was like a carrot on a stick, but I couldn't do anything about it.

So we had done one team in front of us and nearly a second. No teams overtook us, but it appeared to me that the team behind us had gained ground, so what was our result;
1h12m to place ourselves 4th. One place outside a NSW medal :shock:

Our Woman's elite team took out 3rd place, great going girls!!!!   http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q136/iniquitythroughsin/wmneltepodium.jpg
